Subject: Converting .XMI to .MID?
Hello out there. Does anyone know of a program that converts files in .XMI
format (extended MIDI) to the .MID format?
Many thanks in advance,
Alistair.

Subject: GUS0038.ZIP: lost or corrupted some patches?!?!??
Hello fellow Gussers,
Please help. I recently upgraded my gus with the upgrade in gus0038.ZIP.
Everything went smoothly during the install, but now I have notice
that some of my favorite midi files will not play in either windows or
in dos. The only clue I get is when I attempt to load these certain songs
into PLAYMIDI. PLAYMIDI gives me one of the following messages (depending
on the mid file I select):
--
Error patch info call for honky: DOS error
or
Error patch info call for piano.pat: DOS error
--
I went and looked in my directory that holds my .pat files and I couldn't
find either of the above mentioned patch files.
So, what has changed with the upgrade, in this regard?
The upgrade wouldn't have removed these patches, would it?
You may respond via e-mail or the Digest.
Thanks in advance -Jon <fletcj@tenfwd.uci.com>

Personal opinion, but I never want a deafening hi-hat over a weak kick drum
which is what tends to happen if you use full sampling range and then full
volume settings on the envelope. Of course, when (if?) Gravis finally get
around to putting in volume offsets into ultrasnd.ini or implement sysex
this will become far less important.
BTW, are people out there downloading this stuff? This is the only thing
I've heard about them so far. Just trying to figure out if there's enough
demand for me to go through the hassle of releasing things.
(At least I got complaints about my piano patch!)
Chris.

Subject: mod4win immediately exits with thanks for using screen
I'm hoping someone else may have seen this. I'm trying to install mod4win.
I've allready got gus0038 drivers installed and all seems well, wave, midi, and
modus all work fine. I tried running mod4win/install, it copies all the files,
set's up the mod4win group with one icon for starting mod4win. I recall reading
somewhere that you need to get to a setup screen and select sound card or
something. I'm fairly sure I'm supposed to start mod4win and then get to a
setup screen. Unfortunatly, when I try to start mod4win, it doesn't even pause,
it just brings up a screen saying thanks for using mod4win with an OK and a
HELP button. If I push ok, it exits back to progman. If I push help, it brings
up a help screen which I browsed, and it seemed to indicate that the setup
screen would automatically popup the first time mod4win is run.
Anyone seen this? Is it possible that mod4win doesn't like the new gus0038
drivers? I've tried everything except going back to the new drivers, or
deinstalling the ultrasound wave driver. It couldn't be possible that it won't
run with the ultrasound wave driver installed, could it?

Subject: Playmidi midi out problem
I have a problem when trying to play midi-files on my tg100, using
playmidi (latest version, gus0038) and playing via the midi out of the
GUS. It sounds as though no note off messages are sent. Everything works
fine under windows. Has anyone noticed this before? I remember I had
some problems with the older version as well, but I don't remember exactly
what went wrong there.
Is there an emulator that plays through the midi out of the GUS, e.g.
can megaem do something like that?

I've been looking for a budget-priced sequencer to use with my Gravis
Ultrasound for a while now, and just recently I was idly flipping
through Keyboard magazine and saw an ad for PowerTracks Pro, a Windows &
DOS sequencer for $29. Yes, twenty-nine dollars. It has a 30-day money-back
guarantee, and is distributed by the same folks who make Band-In-A-Box,
so I thought it might be worth a try.
A note: while I have used WinJammer, Recording Session, Power Chords,
and MIDI Connections, I have not used Cubase, Cakewalk, or any other
multi-hundred dollar sequencer, with the exception of a lot of Mac
software from 4 years ago or so.
The program does support patch caching (necessary for the Gravis
Ultrasound), and seems to do it quite seamlessly. There is an option to
"Cache Patches Now", and several different options in the setup dialogs
to set when to cache. All of the options seemed to work just fine. I
really didn't have to set anything.
The feature list of this program is impressive. It has a piano keyboard
view, guitar view, event list view, and standard notation view. The
guitar view is quite nice, and does a good job of figuring out
"appropriate" fingerings for chords. Music can be entered by hand in the
piano view, guitar view, event list, or notation view. In addition, it
(obviously) supports real-time recording, and step-time.
It can print scores, though its notation features are slim. It has a
large selection of very powerful editing features. It would be a snap
to, for example, take every 16th note above C5 and copy it one octave
higher, 25 ticks later, and on a different channel. Using filters,
copying, pasting, and transposing, you can do amazing things.
The program also has a nice sysex librarian feature, including pre-built
macros to do patch dumps from about 30 or so popular synths and sound
modules, including the Roland SCC-1 and MT-32, and old favorites like
the M1 and D-50. It includes a lot of extra support for mixer and
effects features of the Roland Sound Canvas.
The sequencer includes SMPTE timing and can sync to an external signal.
It can also work with Midi Time Code.
There were a few minor glitches. When reading in MIDI files from
elsewhere, it generally didn't sense the patch setting for each channel,
so to change the patches on a channel, you had to either edit the patch
change using the event list, or delete all patch changes and fill in a
patch manually for each track. Either way, it wasn't a big deal, and
once it's been done you can save the file in the PowerTracks native
format. Also, the program has a HUGE number of options, and I found it
easy to get lost, or would find myself not understanding an odd behavior
at first. Still, tha manual is fairly complete, and I was always able to
figure out my problems.
All in all, I'd say this product is WELL worth $29, and in fact has
rocketed to the top of my hit parade. I really don't see how anyone who
needs a sequencer could go wrong with this product. If you don't have
one, this is plenty powerful. If you already have one, chances are this
one will have a feature or two that will make it worth the money.
There's a no-questions-asked 30-day guarantee, so I give it a big fat
thumbs up.

Music or the author of PowerTracks Pro.
